How Did Last Year’s Plan Work Out?

How Did Last Year’s Plan Work Out?

Let’s not saddle up for the same chaos this year. What do you think?

Year over year, you launch with new goals and objectives and a new strategy for success.

You start with a reflection of last year… We had a budget. We had a headcount plan. And, we had a fully approved project plan.  If you barely made it over the finish line this year holding up a half-red scorecard… you are not alone, and there’s hope.

Identify Root Cause First

In 90% of our experiences, clients share fantastic plans that will lead to success and prosperity if they can “just execute”.  What prevents us from executing? As many of you know, the damn fires.  Changes in the course. Changes in priorities. Immediate changes in daily activity. This is also known as the daily whirlwind. The fires consume us and leave nothing but the undone work on your conscience. The best advice is to look for the root cause. What caused the plan to go off course? What is the nature of these fires and is there consistency in the distraction? Many times, the answer is yes.

Create a Better Plan

We are not always good at planning for contingencies. Good plans turn to great when there is more than one path to success. When you look at your plan, is it one direction with only one way to win?  There you go…  When a plan goes bad it’s usually due to time, cost, and people. Expectations will change, budgets shrink, and people turn over. Work this into your plan and set up contingencies for success.

Work in the time required to identify the ongoing fires and challenges ahead. With well-thought-out contingencies, you set better timing expectations. Plan time to fail fast, course correct and do the coaching that must be done.
